| Teacher facilities | |
The software provides teachers with a carefully structured set of screens, presenting exactly the information needed for each sub-phase of the Letters and Sounds scheme of synthetic phonics. For example, the screen below shows the full set of sounds in a form that the teacher can use to bring up specific sounds for class practice. Note. The 'oo' and 'th' appear twice because Letters and Sounds requires that they are given alternative sounds. |

| As the control panel below shows, teachers can quickly find the screen they need, with a range of formats including both Regular and Tricky words. | |

|
| Of course, the most vital screen is a simple drag and drop facility, allowing teachers to bring the sounds into place that they need, when they need them. in the example below the teacher has selected a screen for the end of Phase 2, and has dragged the word 'bad' into place. | |

| Teachers are also provided with a diagnostic Feedback screen based on a key student exercise. This lets them know exactly the type of errors being made by the student. | |
| Student games | |
| The best way to ensure success is to enthuse students, making them want to spend time and attention on learning to read. Handheld Phonics provides a range of exercises that students see as games. For example, the screen below shows students being asked to match the picture with the correct 'sounding' (c - a - t). | |

| Another game that students enjoy and teachers know is vital to development is Full Circle. This is about changing words one sound at a time to make new words. For example, in the screen below the student hears 'f - a - n'. They then will work out that the 'x' sound shown is wrong. They will then reset it (by clicking the yellow button). They will then drag the 'n' into place. | |

| Handheld versions | |
We would always expect students to first see our software under adult instruction on PC, laptop, or interactive whiteboard. Once they understand how to do the exercises however, they can be set free to use it on handheld devices such as PDAs and Sony PSPs. There are, for example, 2 million PSPs already in the UK, so most parents do not need to buy a new PSP (about £110+VAT). The key advantage is that pupils can then continue learning in the playground and at home, with the enthusiasm that handheld devices always generate. |
